What is inflammation?
Inflammation is part of our natural healing process. When our bodies come into contact with injury, illness, or toxins, our immune system sends inflammatory cells and substances to defend themselves and jump-start the healing process.
Inflammation is your body’s response to an illness, injury or something that doesn’t belong in your body such as germs or toxic chemicals. Inflammation is a normal and important process that allows your body to heal. Fever, for example, is how you know your body’s inflammatory system is working correctly when you’re ill. But inflammation can harm you if it occurs in healthy tissues or goes on for too long.
There are two types of inflammation:
Acute inflammation is the rapid immune-system defense response that causes redness and swelling around a cut or in a sore throat. Intended to trap and negate bacteria, viruses or toxic chemicals, acute inflammation seldom lasts greater than two weeks.
Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, occurs when the body starts or continues sending out inflammatory cells and substances, even though there is no infection or injury or danger. Because this happens internally, the signs of chronic inflammation are more subtle and can increase gradually over a long period of time.
An example of chronic inflammation is rheumatoid arthritis where inflammatory cells and substances attack joint tissues. This leads to inflammation that comes and goes and can cause severe damage to joints.
With chronic inflammation, processes that normally protect your body end up hurting it. Chronic inflammation can last for months or years. You may have periods where it improves and other times when it gets worse.
Inflammation not specifically from an infection or injury often doesn’t manifest into clear symptoms. It just smolders in the background. That is why it is so important to know the signs of chronic inflammation and what to do it you notice it. You can help yourself… you are not powerless against chronic inflammation!!
